The hidden cost of misplaced expectations
Most leaders are quietly frustrated…
Not because life isn’t working as they envisioned it.
But because their expectations are misplaced.
I know this because I used to expect more from:
- others to understand me
- others to support me
- others to meet my needs
And when that didn’t happen…
- Frustration increased.
- Confidence dropped.
- Progress stalled.
But everything changed when I discovered a truth most people avoid:
You will never find lasting happiness by expecting others to meet your needs.
Because expectations placed on others—and external systems—create dependency.
But expectations placed on yourself create power.
The shift is simple, but not easy.
I stopped asking:
- “Why aren’t they showing up for me?”
And started asking:
- “Am I showing up for myself… and for others as well?”
So, what happens when you take ownership?
The moment you take ownership:
- Your standards rise
- Your clarity improves
- Your actions align
And everything begins to change.
This is where self-leadership begins.
Not with control over others.
But with responsibility for yourself first.
Especially when you consistently take intentional control of your life.
Because leadership isn’t about waiting.
It’s about creating.
You don’t need to feel ready. You need to start pedaling to become steady.
Leadership transformation always follows the same path:
Clarity → Action → Impact
And at the center of that journey:
Empowerment is the bridge from invisibility to impact. Take intentional actions to create opportunities for growth.
If this resonated with you, I’d like to hear from you.
Where in your life, career, or business are you still expecting others to deliver what you should be creating for yourself?

I’ll share how to identify where expectations are silently holding you back, and how to shift back into ownership, alignment, and momentum.
A Real-World Reminder
It aired on March 21 on WCCO-TV Channel 4 News, where I had the opportunity to contribute to this feature. The legacy of Frederick McKinley Jones.
What stood out to me wasn’t just his innovation…
It was how his credibility traveled before recognition ever did.
His reputation moved ahead of him because he consistently demonstrated value in an era stacked with odds that could have stopped most.
That’s the same principle we talked about today.
Confidence and credibility are built long before performance makes them visible.
